Aquatics

Lap swim is offered every day. Pool activity schedules may be found on the aquatics page and the weekly facility schedules page.

The pool is heated to 81 degrees Fahrenheit.

The pool is 25 yards long, 6 lanes wide and our depths range from 3 feet to 7 feet.

Swim Lessons

Each lesson participant is encouraged to wear proper swim attire. Children who are not toilet trained must wear swim diapers under their attire. Goggles are not necessary but may be recommended for more advanced levels. Non-members, please provide your own towel; SRC towels are for member use only.

The Wade King Student Recreation Center pool is set at a recreational temperature of 81˚F. Additional clothing layers, such as a rash-guard, may provide insulation for your child. Please note that additional clothing layers must be appropriate swim attire.

The Swim Lessons Coordinator will meet you in the SRC lobby no more than 15 minutes prior to lesson starting. Per our facility’s policy, each participant must be accompanied back to the pool. Please check in at the front desk if you do not see the Swim Lessons Coordinator.

The SRC is a student-focused facility that is paid for by student fees but welcomes community participation. As such, policies have been set by the Rec Center Advisory Committee (RCAC) that allow children in the facility during designated family hours (Fridays after 6:00 pm and all day Saturday and Sunday) and for scheduled swim lessons. During all other hours, children must be accompanied through the facility by a staff member. For consistency, the Swim Lessons Coordinator or Swim Instructor will meet the parents at the front desk 15 minutes prior to every group and private lesson.

You are welcome to watch your participant from any of the benches on deck, but please refrain from approaching your participant during their lesson. If your presence on deck is disruptive to your participant’s learning environment, then you may be asked to wait in the SRC lobby until the end of lessons. If you have questions, comments, or concerns during the lesson please address them with the Swim Lessons Coordinator or wait until after lessons to approach your participant’s swim instructor.

Our swim instructors will be available 15 minutes prior to lessons and 5 minutes following lessons for questions or comments regarding your participant’s swimming goals and progress. Your swim instructors will also provide you and your participant with an end of session report card.

Climbing Wall

The Student Recreation Center features two different walls in our climbing wall area. Our top rope wall is 30 feet tall, and our bouldering wall is 13 feet tall.

Yes, we offer several non-credit climbing classes throughout the academic year. In these classes you will learn basic climbing techniques and how to belay. Visit our climbing classes page or ask a climbing wall staff member for more information.

Sport Clubs

Western Washington University’s sport club program gives students the opportunity to participate in competitive and recreational sports, most of which are not offered as varsity athletics. Sport club teams have the opportunity to practice, take part in tournaments and compete at specialized levels. While some are recreational, most are highly competitive. Sport clubs are distinguished as student-initiated and student-run programs that allow many opportunities for leadership and decision-making. Sport clubs are allotted a small budget from Western Washington University Services & Activities fee but raise funds primarily by team dues, fundraising efforts and donations.

Most Sport Clubs recruit new members in the beginning of Fall Quarter but some take new members at any point of the year. To inquire more information about a specific club, contact names, email addresses and links to team websites are available on this website through the active teams link. All Sport Club members must have a valid form of primary medical insurance and register through the Sport Club Login.

The sport club program brings together people that share common interests and offers members the opportunity to grow within their leadership, team work, and competitive skills. Whether you are seeking a high level of competition, learning a new sport or skill, or simply wanting to meet new people or enjoy some recreational fun, club sports can offer you a great experience.

In order to join you do not have to be an expert within the sport. Some sports are limited by roster size and hold tryouts to fill their roster. Others have competitive and recreational levels. Many clubs will work with you to help develop your skills in order to become a more competitive player in the future.

Teams accept donations through the Western Washington University Foundation. Donations can be made online and instructions can be found on the Foundations website.

The cost of being apart of a sport club greatly varies depending on which club you are interested in joining. Each team has team dues either annually or quarterly but additional costs could be added depending on gear, travel and other activities.

If you have an interest in developing a new sport club, the first step is to contact the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation to express your interest. You can contact her by email at SommerC@wwu.edu or by phone at (360) 650-4191. She will provide you with the necessary information. We will only consider sports that the university doesn’t already offer as a varsity sport.

Yes, sport clubs are partially funded through student fees and members are required to abide by the WWU Student Code of Conduct. If you have questions, email the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation.

A grade point average of 2.0 is required to be able to participate in the Sport Club Program.
