Sailing Basics

Equipment Needs

To be properly prepared please come with clothes and shoes that can get wet. A rainjacket and a warm hat are useful for spring sailing. Finally, a change of clothes and a towel are a good idea as well! Lakewood provides lifejackets (required) and wetsuits (optional). Lockers, showers, and bathrooms/changing rooms (including gender-neutral options) are all available on site.

Course Description

This series of four 2.5hr lessons will take you through the basics of sailing smallboats - taught by Lakewood's student staff! Instruction will happen on shore and out on the lake aboard WWU’s fleet of 14-foot trainer dinghies. After attending all lessons, most participants will have sufficient expertise to continue to sail at Lakewood and progress their skills independently or with friends/family. No prior sailing or water experience required! For disability accommodations, questions, or requests, please contact lakewood@wwu.edu.

Lessons occur weekly on either Fridays or Saturdays for four consecutive weeks (Fridays 4p-6:30p) (Saturdays 11a-1:30p) Jul 12 / Jul 13 through Aug 2 / Aug 3.

Lessons will not be cancelled due to weather. If it is particularly nasty, we will proceed with the lesson indoors.
