Sailing Basics

Equipment Needs

To be properly prepared please come with clothes and shoes that can get wet. A rain jacket and a warm hat are useful for spring sailing. Finally, a change of clothes and a towel are a good idea as well! Lakewood provides lifejackets (required) and wetsuits (optional). Lockers, showers, and bathrooms/changing rooms (including gender-neutral options) are all available on site.

Course Description

This series of four lessons will take you through the basics of sailing smallboats. Instruction will happen on shore and out on the Lake aboard WWU’s fleet of 14-foot trainer dinghies. Lessons are taught by Western students! After attending all four lessons, most students will have sufficient expertise to continue to sail at Lakewood and progress their skills independently or with family/friends. No prior sailing or water experience required! For disability accommodations, fee waiver requests, or general questions, please contact lakewood@wwu.edu.

Lessons occur at Western’s Lakewood Waterfront Facility located @ 2410 Lake Whatcom Blvd.
